It’s nice to see more TV shows featuring autistic characters in a normal way, not as victims or villains but as people. While I can’t speak to how true the portrayal of the main character’s autism is, the pilot is full of compelling characters with an interesting story. While the board at Shaun Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore, aka Norman Bates from the Bates Motel TV series) new hospital debates whether to allow a surgical resident with autism, Shaun saves a young boy’s life at the airport using MacGyver’d surgical tools. The con itself was pretty decent, but I had a memorable interaction with one of the vendors in the Dealer’s Room that stuck with me as an example of how not to do business. Overall, I had a blast and so did the attendees. We were short-staffed, but we made it work and I think we really put on an excellent convention, especially for a first-year convention. There were some snafus, like not having a long enough HDMI cord for the panel room with AV and not being able to stream the content we were planning on from Funimation, but that’s lessons learned. For those unaware, Yule is the celebration of the Winter Solstice – the shortest day of the year. While at a holiday party on Sunday, we broke out my brand-new copy of Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Superheroes to play in two-player mode and it was loads of fun.
